Assistant Professor · CIS, University of Pennsylvania
Staff Research Scientist · Apple (MLR)
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of CIS at the University of Pennsylvania, and a primary faculty member of the GRASP Lab and ASSET Center. I also work part-time as a Staff Research Scientist at Apple MLR (full-time 2022–2025). Previously I was a Research Scientist at Meta AI (FAIR). I received my Ph.D. from EEE, University of Hong Kong in 2018 and B.Eng. from EE, Tsinghua University in 2014.
My research goal is to advance AI agents' ability to interact with the physical world — leveraging generative ML for world modeling, iterative reasoning, and decision-making. I build multi-modal generative models spanning language, images, video, and 3D, targeting systems that are efficient, flexible, scalable, and knowledgeable.
I was fortunate to mentor many talented students and interns during my time at FAIR and Apple MLR, many of whom have gone on to exciting roles in academia and industry, including Junxian He (Assistant Professor, HKUST), Chunting Zhou (Meta → Stealth Startup), Demi Guo (Co-founder, Pika), Dinghuai Zhang (xAI), Tianrong Chen (Apple), Anne Wu (Research Fellow, Harvard), Peiye Zhuang (Roblox), and others.
